Fragrant House Plants

By Jennifer Price

With two large dogs in the house, I am forever looking for ways to keep the air in the house fresh and pleasant. I love fragrant oils burnt in lamps but the oil isn’t cheap! I also sprinkle the filter on the vacuum with a fragrant oil, but the aroma only sticks around for a short time after I’m finished vacuuming.

Fragrant house plants offer a continuous aroma and is the natural way (and by far my favorite way) to keep your home fresh. Everyone’s taste is different. I prefer a spicy, woodsy or musky scent while others are drawn to aromas more sweet and floral.

Below is a list of fragrant houseplants. Try some at home and in the office! To help you find your favorite, I’ve included information that describes the fragrance whenever possible:

Aglaia odorata (Chinese Perfume Plant) – In the dwarf form, this is an easy to grow bush that produces fragrant yellow flowers – as small as a rice-grain – with very strong perfume. The fragrance is outstanding!

Allamanda cathartica (Golden Trumpet Vine) - In Suriname’s traditional medicine, the roots are used against jaundice, complications with malaria and enlarged spleen. The flowers act as a laxative. Yellow allamanda has also an antibiotic action against Staphylococcus.

Alpinia (Ginger) - Their thick fragrant rootstocks resemble the scent of ginger.

Araujia sericofera (Cruel plant) - White fragrant flowers in summer and fall in racemes of 2-4 inches long. This vine is also called “Cruel Plant” as it attracts and traps moths into the flowers in the evening, then releases them as the flower opens in the morning.

Begonias - Some of the hybrids are lightly fragrant – ‘Honeysuckle,’ ‘Jim Wyrtzen,’ Lenore Olivier,’ ‘Tea Rose,’ are at least two species. Solananthera and venosa, are more strongly scented.

Bouvardia ternifolia (Jasmine Plant, Scarlet Trumpetilla) - Ideal for a sunny windowsill. Intensely jasmine-like fragrance and at night the long, white tubular flowers evoke intoxicating evening pleasure. A sun-loving plant from Mexico, flowering intermittently throughout the year.

Brugmansias (Angel’s Trumpets) – Most brugmansias are fragrant except for sanguinea and some of its hybrids.

Brunfelsias (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow) – Lovely fragrance and smaller flowers that start out dark purple and change to palest light blue.

Buddleja (Butterfly Bush) – These have honey-scented flowers and bloom in the winter indoors.

Bursera - Bursera is a small American genus related to frankincense and myrrh. Their wood is very odoriferous, and their sap is sometimes collected by indigenous people.

Carissa macrocarpa (Natal Plum) - white, fragrant flowers, scarlet fruits

Cassia didimobotrya – The leaves smell like buttered popcorn! Many kinds of these plants produce leather-tanning agents, cough medicine and tobacco flavoring. Senna is also produced, it is a laxative obtained from the foliage and pods of several varieties.

Cedronella canariensis (False Balm of Gilead) - The aromatic leaves are dried for use in pot-pourri with a musky woody scent.

Coffea arabica (Coffee) - Coffeas are handsome foliage plants that produce fragrant, white flowers and are especially decorative when bearing their red fruits, which resemble cranberries.

Coleonema pulchra (Breath of Heaven) - While the flowers are not scented, the small, narrow-linear leaves are pleasantly aromatic when they are crushed or brushed.

Coronilla valentina – This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and birds. It has bloomy leaves and a profusion of yellow blossoms that smell like peaches.

Cryptocereus anthonyanus (Rick-Rack Cactus) – This is a night bloomer and its flowers last for only a single night. It is common that some specimens rarely or never flower, but when they do they produce many white, pink and maroon slender-petaled starburst blossoms. The blossoms begin to open right at dusk, releasing a pleasing fragrance that is intended intended to attract nocturnal pollinators.

Heliotropium arborescens (Cherry Pie) – They produce very pretty, wonderfully fragrant flowers that smell like cherry pie! The flowers cluster up to 8 inches across. They may be deep blue-violet to purple, lavender or almost white.

Jasmines - Jasmine essential oil has a sweet, exotic and rich floral scent and the oil is deep orange-brown in color. The small white star-shaped flower’s aroma is most intense at night.

Michelia (Banana Shrub) – It’s covered with small, glossy green leaves and bears clusters of large, white, sometimes purple-streaked, flowers with a potent, sweet banana scent.

Pandanus odoratissimus (Screw Pine) – These don’t produce flowers when they are small, but are often grown for their ornamental foliage. They are easy to grow and make nice houseplants. The fibers from several kinds of Pandanus are used for making rope, baskets, fans, and so forth, and the natives use the fruits as food.

Passiflora (Incense) - is a deciduous plant with fragrant, violet-mauve, lace-like blossoms that are almost 5 inches across. The “Passion Flower’s” outer ring consists of 10 tepals, which are said to represent the ten apostles who witnessed the crucifixion of Christ. Within this circle of petals there is a ring of filaments, which allude to the crown of thorns. In the center, there are five stamens representing His wounds and three stigmas representing the nails. The leaves and whip-like tendrils represent the hands and scourges of Christ’s persecutors.

Pelargoniums (Scented Geraniums) – The foliage is varied and very attractive and when crushed, give off a strong, aromatic scent resembling rose, cinnamon, mint, lemon, coconut and others. Fresh leaves may be used in baking to add flavor to fruit cups, or in beverages or finger bowls to add an interesting aroma. Dried leaves are used in teas, tisanes, potpourris and sachets. Those commonly grown are somewhat woody perennials with round leaves on short stalks, and bright flowers in big clusters produced from the upper parts of the stem. Other species are annuals or may have a striking succulent form.

Pereskia aculeata (Lemon Vine) – Climbing, leaved cactus with lemon-scented flowers. Fruits that form are edible.

Plectranthus (Spur Flower) - The fragrance of plectranthus is especially noticeable. Most kinds have a warmly sweet fragrance. Cuban oregano is reminiscent of oregano or thyme. The strongest scent is from the Vicks plant. Some herbalists actually use its leaves as aromatherapy for colds and congestion.

Pogostemon hyeanus (Patchouli) - This fragrant herb, with soft, opposite, egg-shaped leaves and square stems, grows from 2 to 3 feet in height, giving out the peculiar, characteristic odor of patchouli when rubbed.

Psidium (Guava) – most varieties have white, scented flowers, lightly scented leaves and edible fruit.

Quisqualis indica (Rangoon Creeper) – This plant flowers throughout the summer with fragrant blossoms that open white, darken to pink and eventually red.

Reseda odorata (Mignonette) – This perennial plant is usually treated as an annual and grown from seed each spring. It is mainly cultivated for the lovely scent of its flowers, which grow in thick racemes up to 2 inches across. The tiny flowers may be greenish white with yellow or orange highlights. The elliptic to spatulate leaves grow 2 to 3 inches long.

Sinningia tub flora (Gloxinia) – The florist’s Gloxinia has been bred to emphasize the large flaring flowers that now come in most colors wither plain or spotted or picotee-edged. The leaves are in a rosette that gives a backdrop for the spectacular flowers.

Stephanotis floribunda (Madagascar Jessamine) – Slender, twining vine, easily controlled. The groups of white, waxy, clustered flowers are very fragrant from spring to autumn, and are commonly used in bridal bouquets, known as the “Bridal Veil Vine”.

Tecoma stans (Yellow Bells) – The shrubby types are easier to form into a medium size bush producing sprays of yellow flowers two or three times a year.

Tillandsia (Air Plants) – Some air plants have scented flowers: crocata, duratii, straminea

Trachelospermum (Confederate Jessamine) – Strong , wiry climber with clusters of strongly fragrant, star-shaped flowers. Leaves are shiny, dark green or variegated.

Verbena – Upright or trailing plants with much divided leaves. Flowers in many-flowered clusters.

Viola odorata (Sweet Violet) – Heart-shaped leaves a few inches (5cm) in length almost hide the violet flowers that are about an inch (2.5cm) across.

Zingier (Culinary Ginger) – Some species have scented leaves and rhizomes.

Gift Baskets Ideas that You Can Do

By Gail Leino

Who doesn’t love good gift baskets? They contain a variety of goodies for your party guests or they work equally as well for birthday gifts. And gift baskets are extremely versatile; you can present a themed gift basket for just about any occasion. Remember the Easter bunny brings gift baskets too.

You can make a simple gift basket for your friendly neighborhood dog lover or dog. Go out and buy some cheap squeakers and chew toys. Maybe pick up a rawhide bone or tasty treat or two. If you know the dog’s favorite dog food buy a bag or cans of it. For a fun container find a smallish cardboard box that will hold everything. Decorate the outside with bone shapes cut out of newspaper and write in black marker, ‘free to good home’ on the front. Then crunch up a lot of newspaper and place in the bottom to support the items. Arrange them in the box and wrap the whole thing in clear cellophane with a big white, grey or rawhide colored bow on top.

For your next bachelorette or bridal shower party gift, make up a naughty basket. You may have to venture into an adult store for some of the items. Buy your friend a year’s subscription to playgirl magazine and put the first issue inside the basket. There are flavored lotions and powders you can buy in the stores. Buy and open a box of condoms to scatter around the basket. For a more romantic tone you can also add incense and candles. For a more outrageous basket, buy a blow up penis and use it as the centerpiece of the gift basket. Place items inside the basket and wrap it in red cellophane.

Of course there are plenty of family friendly kinds of gift baskets you can make for your friends and relatives, just think about what they like and what their hobbies are.

How to Hypnotize Yourself

By Jon C Rhodes

To begin with, you will need to make sure that you will not be disturbed for at least half and hour, preferably an hour. Turn off phones, and tell family and friends not to bother you for a while. Find a comfortable place. Somewhere that is neat and tidy, and of a comfortable temperature. Subdue the lighting if this helps you. If you wish, you could light some candles and burn some incense. You can be seated, or lie down – whichever is most comfortable for you. Importantly make sure that your legs are not crossed, as you could end up going numb after half an hour!

1) Close your eyes and take 10 slow deep breaths – in through the nose, and out through the mouth. Say to yourself the word ‘Relax’ on each out breath.
2) Now imagine yourself at the top of 10 steps, with a door at the bottom. With every slow step you take down, feel yourself becoming deeper and deeper relaxed.
3) When you get to the bottom open the door to your ideal place of relaxation. It could be a beach, a garden, anywhere. It could be somewhere real, or imagined.
4) Try to use as many senses as you can. Take a good look around. Pause and listen to any sounds. Perhaps you can hear the call of a bird, or the breeze gently blowing. Perhaps you can smell the sweet scent of flowers, or the salt in the sea? Touch objects, and make it as real as you possibly can.
5) Explore your relaxing haven, and enjoy it for as long as you wish.

This is a great technique to help relaxation, and your ability to relax will improve the more you do this. Most of us do not relax anywhere near enough, and it damages our health in many ways. Stress weakens our immune systems, causes irritability, anxiety, and unhappiness. Even if you just do relaxation work, you will massively improve your overall health in almost every area. If you are struggling with this technique, then persevere. Getting into a hypnotic state is a skill that will improve over time. Don’t expect too much, you will probably still be aware of what is going on around you. It may be worthwhile visiting a clinical hypnotherapist, or buying a recording at least once, in order to experience the feeling of a trance. When you have experienced a trance a few times, you will be more informed as to what state of mind you are seeking.

You can also take this self hypnosis a little further if you wish. You can learn to give yourself specific therapy the more you practice. Here are a few techniques you can use after you have reached number 5.

What the mind imagines, it believes has really happened. If you imagine something bad happening to you, you will feel the emotions as if it is really happening. Success breeds success, so if you visualise yourself achieving something, then it will help you to do just that. You may wish to visualise yourself slimmer, healthier or wealthier for example. Or you may wish to visualise yourself having achieved something, such as a promotion or a new job. Make the image as real as you can, use all of your senses, and do this as often as you can.

You are only limited by your imagination. In fact you should notice that your creative powers increase the more that you use self hypnosis, as your mind becomes more accustomed to utilizing its creative powers. Stick with it. What I sometimes find is that people will stop using hypnosis once they have made the necessary improvements that they wished to make. However this may enetually deny the overall benefits of the increased relaxation, as things may slowly slip back to where they started. Set a specific time to do it, even if it is only once a week. If you have specific issues that you wish to deal with, then increase this accordingly, perhaps every day for a few weeks.

I hope me sharing this technique with you will help some of you to improve your mental and physical wellbeing, and realise what a useful tool for change hypnosis is. I genuinely want to help as many people as possible to live long, healthy and happy lives. I hope this contributes in some way. Please feel free to contact me to share your success stories, or for further advice.

Many Tools to Help You Meditate

By Gene M

Meditation has many rewards and benefits. With regular practice anyone who is willing to be diligent and spend even few minutes a day sitting quietly the many great effects that meditation will have on their lives. The regular practice of meditation brings a wide range of benefits through its influence on the mind. It reduces brain activity and creates a sense of relaxation and calm; it regulates blood pressure and reduces emotional stress. The fundamental aim of meditation is, by focusing or concentrating the mind, to let go of distractions and to exist fully in the present moment. It is particularly attractive as antidote to modern materialism and spiritual emptiness.

It is true that basic meditation requires no special meditation tools, but like in all other activities there tools that can help you greatly increase your performance. Just like every top ranked tennis player requires high quality rocket to compete so are people who meditate can boost their meditation skills using some of the tools that can be found on many meditation websites and in many yoga stores.

Some meditation products that can help in your practice can include incense, candles, relaxing music or learning DVDs you can use to learn techniques and meditation tips. There are many helpful products that can help you with making your meditation more comfortable and productive. For example if you have problems sitting you can use cushions or benches that will help you relieve some of the pressure on your legs that is typical for someone who sits in the same position for prolonged period of time. Not all of us can sit cross legged in a lotus position like many well trained yogis. But that shouldn’t stop you from practicing meditation.

For example if you experience numbness and pain in your legs from sitting in the same position for long period of time you should relieve the pressure from your legs by reducing the stress you put on them. This can be done using meditation cushion or with meditation chair. This will help you prolong your meditation process and allow you to concentrate more on breathing rather than trying to quiet the painful feeling you experience from sitting cross-legged.

Creating a sacred space for meditation is also an important factor in how well you meditate. Therefore it’s important to burn healing incense or light candles that can be use as aromatherapy tool or to use it in a candle meditation.

As you can see there many ways you can boost and improve you meditation skills by few simple tools that can be used during the meditation. But remember the only way you can improve is to practice. So meditation tools or not, take a first step and start meditating today.

Listen to Relaxation Music – Boost Your Health, Rejuvenate Your Mind

By Mark Merissa

Music can be a powerful tool for relaxing one’s mind. A stressed out professional can certainly benefit from listening to good music at the end of a hectic workday. Music affects our minds deeply, unlike any other known tools. When you listen to music, your brain gets stimulated, releasing endorphins in blood stream. As the endorphin level increases, you will feel relaxed. Your heart is also affected by music. When you listen to a high energy music track, your heartbeat accelerates or decelerates according to the pace of the music.

Next time you return home after a stressful day, treat yourself to a warm bubble bath with some Yanni piece playing in the background. As you soak in the tub, close your eyes. You will soon feel rejuvenated. Again, if you have trouble concentrating on studies before an important examination, listen to orchestra music with headphones on. The music will shut out any noise from outside and the rhythmic music will help you maximize your concentration and memorize your studies better.

The use of headphones while listening to music has a two-fold effect. First off, it blocks any noise from outside. Secondly, it affects the brain directly, as the music is playing from close proximity of it. Just remember to turn the volume down to acceptable levels. The volume level is like a double edged sword. If you push it up too high, it will affect your hearing. If you set it too low, it will let outside noise in and defeat the purpose of the whole process. Choose your optimum volume level carefully.

Different kinds of music need different kinds of surroundings to function properly. For instance, a slow, rhythmic oriental music track is best used in tandem with burning incense and candlelight. When you have trouble sleeping at night, try some oriental piece of music with some aromatherapy candles or incense burning nearby. You will find yourself getting relaxed, until finally falling asleep. Scientists have proved that playing slow but energy inducing music can accelerate the recovery of a patient from ailment or trauma. According to a recent research, the pain of operation after childbirth may be reduced by around 40% by playing special kind of music by the mother’s bedside. Even patients with amputated limbs have reported feeling less pain after listening to some special kinds of music. This has led to in-depth research regarding the relation of pain and the effect of music on it.

Managing Stress With Meditation and Relaxation

By Ceejay Caton

With the world economy in turmoil it is easy to see how any one of us can get depressed and stressed out about the impact on our lives. The best way in managing stress is to make sure that we do not let its negative effects rule our lives.

Our mind is the first to be affected by stress — financial problems, arguments, or a loss of job can all have an overwhelming effect on our mind. If you let worries and problems seep into your conscious mind your thoughts become disrupted and how you think becomes affected.

While I may say you need to relax this is not always easily achieved. But here are a few pointers on how you can get yourself into a state of relaxation.

Aromatherapy relies on fragrance to help you relax. The scents of lavender or jasmine are well known for their relaxing benefits and can help to put you in a meditative state. You will find scented candles, incense and oils also have the same beneficial effects.

The ancient art of meditation can help you to focus all of your energy in directing your mind to relax. Meditation allows you to focus your mind on a single thought while letting others trickle away to nothing.

The first step to meditation is to find a peaceful place. Stress management starts with serenity and solitude. Find the quietest room in the house or camp out with nature in a secluded and calming spot.

Close your eyes and focus your mind on specific parts of your body, starting with your toes moving up to your legs, stomach, chest, arms and hands and up to the top of your head. Concentrate on these areas, telling each part to relax. Be careful not to fall asleep as this will immediately stop all meditative attempts.

Once every part of your body has relaxed you will feel a slight heaviness. This usually happens during your first attempt at meditation but after a while, you will no longer feel your body.

In your mind visualize and focus on a question — such as a solution to your problem. Imagine that you are watching a movie. You might notice that fleeting thoughts and scenes appear and disappear. Keep a note of these in passing but don’t focus on them too much.

You will be able to put yourself into a relaxed meditative state quicker after you have practiced this technique enough. With practice you will find that your mind will soon clear and allow you to focus on the best way of managing stress. After meditation you will feel refreshed and ready to face life’s stresses.

How to Learn Transcendental Meditation

By Dr. Keith DeBoer

Sitting in a field of flowers, legs crossed, wrapped in white cloth, the sweet smell of incense wafting through the air. That’s what most people think of when they hear the word: meditation. But what we see and hear in the media is not always an accurate picture of reality. The Transcendental Meditation® technique is a simple mental procedure that is practiced for twenty minutes twice per day. It has been learned by millions of people and has been the subject of hundreds of research studies. But just what is Transcendental Meditation (or TM) and how does one learn it? Here are some of the details regarding the TM technique and its practice.

Environment-While it is certainly enjoyable to practice the Transcendental Mediation technique in a quiet place it is not necessary. Many busy people in all walks of life practice the TM technique in airports, train stations, lobbies and hotel rooms. Because the TM technique is an automatic and natural response of the mind and body, the process is easy in any kind of environment whether it is quiet and secluded or noisy and public.

Posture–Transcendental Meditation (TM) is practiced sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. One can sit in a chair, on the bed or on the floor. Any location or sitting position is considered to be correct as long as one is comfortable. The TM technique is never practiced while lying down.

Concentration-In a concentration technique for self development a person might be asked to focus on a candle, to eliminate all thoughts, to visualize something or to focus on a particular thought, part of the body etc. Then, whenever the mind wanders from the candle or the visualization etc. the concentration technique requires that we bring our attention back to the point or topic of focus i.e. candle etc. The TM technique however, is unique and different in that it does not involve any concentration or focus. Transcendental Meditation is a completely effortless technique in which the mind flows naturally and purposefully to the field of creative silence (or Pure Consciousness) at the source of the mind. This happens spontaneously and naturally, with out effort, when one practices the Transcendental Meditation technique.

Breathing-Many meditation techniques focus on the rhythm of the breath. The TM technique does not focus on the breath or its rhythm. Instead TM utilizes the minds own natural tendency to move towards greater peace and silence within in the same way that gravity causes a stone to sink through the water in a pond. In this same way, the mind is spontaneously and naturally drawn deep inside during the TM practice, independent of what may be going on with the breath.

The technique of TM is easy and effortless. It is also unique and profound. Because each person has different experiences during their TM course and also learns at a different pace, personal instruction by a certified TM teacher is vital. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of the TM technique, in his book The Science of Being and Art of Living explains it like this: “The practice of Transcendental Meditation must always be given by the expert teachers of Transcendental Meditation who have been properly trained to give it and who have been trained to check the experiences. The checking of experiences is a vital point in the practice of Transcendental Meditation. Again, it cannot be done through books.”

I learned the TM technique from a qualified TM teacher when I was a senior in high school. Since then it has given me thousands of hours of inner peace and tranquility. It has made me a better person and a more effective human being. I hope that you will also have the opportunity to enjoy it soon!

Frankincense – The Medicinal Herb

By Martin Miller-Yianni

Frankincense or olibanum is well known for one good reason as it was one of the three gift to the baby Jesus brought from the Three Kings. It has been around well before this time. Frankincense was found in the tomb of the ancient Egyptian King Tutankhamen over 3300 years ago. Going back even further, frankincense has been traded on the Arabian Peninsula and in North Africa for more than 5000 years.

Herbs have many uses including culinary, medicinal and even spiritual uses. With the medicinal or spiritual use is it considered the tag ‘herbs’ covers all parts of the plant including leaves, roots, flowers, seeds, resin, root bark, inner bark and berries. Taking this into account, frankincense technically a herb. This will surprise many, including myself.

Basically the herb frankincense is an aromatic resin manufactured from Boswellia tree. Frankincense is used in perfumery and aromatherapy. The olibanum essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the dry resin. It is used as an incense and in many perfumes. It is not only in the perfume industry, but is also found in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

The Boswellia trees have to be about 8 to 10 years old to start producing the resin. They are harvested 2 to 3 times a year. Omani frankincense is said to be the best in the world with a close second from resins produced from the north coast of Somalia. Trees are extremely hardy sometimes seemingly growing directly out of solid rock. The aroma from the tears are considered valuable for their healing abilities and religious ritual

The method is for frankincense to be tapped by scraping the bark, which releases resins that will bleed and harden. There are many varieties of frankincense trees, each with its own unique type of resin. Soil and climate differences give even more varieties of the resin.

Christian and Islamic faiths have often used frankincense mixed with oils to anoint newborn infants and individuals considered to be moving into a new phase in their spiritual lives.

Frankincense is actually edible and often used in various traditional medicines in Asia for digestion and healthy skin. The edible frankincense must be pure for internal consumption, meaning it should be completely translucent, with no black or brown impurities. It is often light yellow with a hint of green. It is often chewed like gum, but is a bit stickier as it is a resin.

In India frankincense as medicine has been used for hundreds of years for treating arthritis. Burning frankincense repels mosquitoes and thus helps protect people and animals from mosquito-born illnesses.

Incense preparations is effective for the treatment of Crohn’s disease. The use of incense on the accompanying specimens of brain tumors and frankincense smoke as a psychoactive drug that relieves depression and anxiety in mice. Human patients that received the frankincense extract showed significant improvement in their arthritis.

It is a sign of greed in these parts that the trees have seen to now be in decline due to over-extraction of resin in recent years as this affect the germination of the seeds. This germination level has dropped from 80% to 16%. This will now lead to lower supplies and higher prices of course.

So, now you know more about frankincense when little Jimmy acts as one of the three Kings giving the herb, you can answer his questions on it. When I taught in Primary Schools in England, we used real frankincense and actually burned some in the classroom to give the children a ‘taste’ of the distinctive scent they give off. All these children will take this memory on to adulthood and never forget that moment whenever frankincense is mentioned.

When Stress Shows Up Don’t Extend the Invitation – 10 Ways to Lay Your Stress to Rest

By Cassandra Mack

Stress is a part of life. It is life’s way of telling us to slow down, be still and pay attention. When we do not pay attention to what our emotions and bodies are telling us, we will suffer the ramifications of living an out of balance life. The truth is, as long as you live on this planet with people who do not think and act as you, you will experience stress. As long as life is a series of ups and downs and unpredictable turns, you’ll experience stress. While you cannot eliminate stress completely, you can learn how to manage it and minimize its negative impact on your life. Here’s how.

Identify Stress

Stress can be defined as the physical, behavioral and emotional symptoms associated with an unbalanced life style. I think of stress as the wear and tear on the mind, body and emotions as a result of not living a balanced life and taking care of one’s self. Most people do not realize that they are stressed until they become ill, angry for no apparent reason or feel totally wiped out. The funny thing about stress is, when you are stressed over a prolonged period of time you will become sick, depressed, lonely, make poor decisions and you’ll no longer enjoy the things that normally give you pleasure. In essence, when you are stressed to the max your get up and go, walks away and leaves.

Know Your Stress Symptoms

Everyone experiences stress differently, but one thing is common. There is a still, intuitive voice inside all of us that knows exactly what we need and what we have to do in order to get our needs met. But often in the middle of crisis, overload or exhaustion it is difficult to hear what this still voice is saying. When we are stressed we hear with ear plugs and see through defected lenses. As a result we are unable to tune in so that we can tune out. When you are stressed everything inside of you will tell you that something is wrong. You may experience symptoms such as; muscle tension, fatigue, restlessness, anxiety, changes in mood and appetite or even despair. Or, you may not experience any of these symptoms, but you will know that something is not quite right.

Listen To Your Stress and Strive for Balance

Stress shows up to teach us how to be still, tune into our innate wisdom and master the life lessons we need to learn in order to find our true path. Have you ever stopped to wonder why as soon as you overcome one hurdle or crisis another one pops up? Perhaps it is because life is trying to help you develop a character trait like patience or courage. Or maybe life is trying to teach you a lesson that you refuse to learn. Sometimes what appears as a crisis is life’s way of challenging you to step out of your comfort zone and try a new thing. One thing I’ve learned about life is, that all events in the physical world are subject to change, but the truth is always constant. And the truth is you are equipped with everything you need to handle your situation.

As a single mom, seminar leader and author, minimizing the stress in my life has become a necessity. I have developed a self-care regimen that has helped me to live life by my own design. Following these principles daily has reduced my stress level and gave me greater control over my life. I share them in the hope that they will help you to move from being stressed to blessed.

1. Begin and End Each Day Sacredly.

Whether you pray, meditate, write your thoughts in a journal or listen to soothing music, starting and ending each day on a sacred note will enable you to tune out the noise of the world in order to tune into your divine wisdom. It’s about communing with your wise self. Carving out sacred time is your personal time to give thanks, commune with the Creator and make your request known to the universe. This is your time to be still and go deep within so that you can listen, understand and acknowledge.

2. Develop an Attitude of Gratitude.

Gratitude is one of the most powerful gifts we posses. When we give thanks or show appreciation we experience the world from the perspective of the glass being have full instead of half empty. Gratitude is not a feeling it is a state of mind. When we choose thanksgiving over lack a deep inner transformation in our reality occurs. We look at the world and everything in it, as whole and complete. At the end of each day write down three to five things in a journal that you are grateful for. Think of your gratitude journal as a daily thank you note to life. As you begin to count your blessings you and everything you touch will be transformed.

3. Practice Healthy Eating Habits and a Consistent Exercise Program.

Our body is the temple that houses our mind, spirit and soul. It is the vehicle through which we manifest our hopes, dreams and deepest desires. If you do not take care of it, it cannot take care of you.

4. Let Go of Toxic Thoughts, Habits and People.

Toxic thoughts, behavior and people will send you head first into the valley of dysfunction. If you have thoughts, habits or other people that are draining you, then they are toxic. The sooner you eliminate them from your life, the better off you will be. Whenever you give your time and energy to negativity you are depleting your emotional bank account. And in the end you end up spiritually and emotionally bankrupted.

5. Learn How to Say No.

Some people are chronic people pleasers who have difficulty saying no and setting boundaries. When we agree to do things that we really don’t want to do, we end up feeling resentful or wasting time and energy trying to get out of the commitment that we really didn’t want to keep in the first place. Today make a commitment to yourself to value your time enough to say no. Then celebrate by doing something special for yourself.

6. Invest in Your Personal Growth.

You owe it to yourself to invest time and money into your intellectual, emotional and spiritual growth. Whether you attend seminars, read self-development books or listen to inspirational tapes, investing in your personal growth will provide you with information that will help you to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

7. Let Go of the Past.

In order to truly move forward, you have to make peace with your past. Many of us hold on to excess baggage far longer than we should. Some of us take one step forward only to take two steps backward because of an unresolved issue that we refuse to deal with. If the ghosts of your past are still haunting you, find a healthy way to gain closure and move on. The drama you save may be your own.

8. Have a Passionate Love Affair with Yourself.

When was the last time that you had a passionate love affair? Just imagine how delightful it would be to fall in love all over again and get butterflies in your stomach like you did when you had your first crush. Most of us have never had a real love affair with ourselves, because we are waiting for Mr. Right to show up. Why wait? Have an affair to remember right now. Buy yourself a beautiful piece of lingerie and admire how beautiful you look in it. Play some soft music. Light your favorite incense or scented candles. Make a candle light dinner for one. Write yourself a poem. Take a trip to the Caribbean. Treat yourself the way you would treat someone who you were madly, head-over-heals in love with. When you romance your soul on a consistent basis you sow seeds of passion into your love life. Imagine how wonderful it will be when you reap the harvest.

9. Visualize A More Positive Relaxed State.

Our subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between what is real and what is not. This is why visualization and affirmation are such powerful tools of creation. Visualize your ideal life. Incorporate all of your senses. How does it look, feel, sound, smell and taste? Affirm your ideal life. Look in the mirror daily and tell yourself what type of person you want to become, what kind of life you want to live and what goals you want to accomplish. Create your ideal life by mapping out a plan and following it. If you can see it, you can achieve it.

10. Reflect, Recharge and Renew.

Create opportunities to nourish your mind, revitalize your body and replenish your spirit. Use these precious moments to reconnect with mind, body and spirit by taking time out each day for reflection, relaxation and self -pampering. Whether you go to a spa, carve out some private down time, write in a journal or kick back with your sister friends take time out each day for you.

Living blessed instead of stress is about making choices that are right for you. You can’t escape stress but you can use it as a positive tool for change instead of allowing it to drain you. True success comes from living life by your design instead of living by default. By incorporating some of these principles into your regimen you will be able to live a more balanced life. So the next time stress shows up decline the invitation.

Manifesting a Vibrant and Healthy Body 6 Action Steps

By Rijuta Tooker

You can easily and significantly improve your health and vitality and manifest a vibrant and healthy body. You will be able to transform your body into a vibrant and sacred health temple. Just as you refer to your body as the temple of your soul, feel that your home is the palace for your body. This is an important concept.

When you heal and make whole your home-palace, you are at the same time healing and making whole your body-temple. You will learn to appreciate the power of your home by creating sacred space within it, space that embodies a nurturing, comforting and healing environment for your whole being.

When we need refuge and want to escape from the outside world, the first place we want to go is ‘home’. Home is sacred, a place we hold dear in our hearts, a place that feels inspiring, peaceful, comforting and healing to our mind, body and spirit.

If you have minor or even serious health issues and want to manifest a vibrant and healthy body, you need to follow the suggestions below. Spend loving and caring time and energy as you transform your home space into a healing and comforting environment. You will also be transforming your body into a vibrant and sacred health temple.

1) Clear the clutter. Open closets, cabinets and drawers. Pull everything out from the hidden nooks and crannies in your home. Organize what you need and love, and give or throw away everything else. Be sure air and energy can flow easily throughout your home.

2) Clean and repair all of the spaces in your home. Leave nothing untouched. Do your best; get help from family and friends or hire someone. As you clean and repair your home, you are also cleaning and repairing your body.

3) Create a template of health for your home. Place healthy plants everywhere. Color the walls with bright and clear colors. Hang photos of healthy people and pictures of vibrant, colorful flowers. Deep-clean your home, then go over it lightly each week thereafter. Fresh air, fragrance, light, water and other natural elements are all healing and necessary to transform your home and ultimately, to manifest a vibrant and healthy body.

4) Make space for self-expression. Look around your home; everything you see is a reflection of your inner being, an outer manifestation of how you perceive yourself. All things we hold dear, nurturing and sacred to our hearts, we expect our homes to fulfill. Our home heals our stress wounds and provides comfort when the cold, callous outside world has disconnected us from our power. Express your personality and inner self within your home. Be aware that your body also wants to express itself in a vibrant and healthy way.

5) Heal the energy of a room if something feels a little ‘off’. Even though you have de-cluttered and cleaned, perhaps there was an argument in the room and uneasy feelings still hang in the air. Take simple measures to heal the area: open windows, display fresh flowers, play classical or spiritual music, pray, meditate and burn incense. Mist the room with water from a fine spray.

6) Make room for peace and serenity. Establish a zone of inner tranquility, ideally where you can shut the door in order to pray, meditate, read or sing quietly and privately. Bring nature into the room: a plant, water fountain, special rocks that you love, a window with a garden view. Classical or meditation music will add. Keep the room truly sacred by taking off your shoes before entering.

Your home is unique because of your special loving and caring time, energy and consciousness. Rather than decorate your home to please others, decorate to please your very essence, your soul.

Creating sacred space in your home is a most fulfilling, creative and healing activity. It not only brings purity, beauty and healing space around you, but also within you. By transforming and healing your home, you will soon be manifesting a vibrant and healthy body, your sacred health temple. Begin now.
